Keppler participated in the Korean War, supporting United Nations operations and conducting shore bombardments. After decades of service, she was decommissioned in 1972, later transferred to Turkey, and served as TCG Tınaztepe (D-355) until 1982.

Over nearly three decades of service, she completed numerous patrols as part of the U.S. Navy's nuclear deterrence mission. USS Mariano G. Vallejo was decommissioned in 1995 and subsequently scrapped under the Nuclear-Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program.
