Finding veterans & military records
There are several ways to reconnect with friends, former service members, and fellow veterans on VetFriends.
Option 1: Search by name (recommended)
- Sign in to your VetFriends account.
- Go to Veteran Search.
- Enter as much as you know:
- First and last name
- Branch of service (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard)
- Service years, if you know them
- Click Search.
Pro tip: start broad. Use just the name and branch first. If nothing comes up, drop the service years or try alternate spellings of the name. Once you find the person, click Message to send them a private message (Premium members only).
Option 2: Search by military unit
If you don't know the person's full name, search by the unit where you served together. You can also browse by branch and unit when you remember the outfit but not the exact unit name.
- Go to Unit Search.
- Select the branch of service.
- Search for the unit name, or browse the units registered under that branch.
- Click the unit to open its page.
- Open the Members tab to browse veterans registered with that unit.
Unit names get entered in many formats. If your first search comes up empty, try a shorter or abbreviated version of the name.
Option 3: Post to the community
If you still can't find the person, ask the VetFriends community.
- Visit the Message Board.
- Click Create a Post.
- Include as much as you can: name, branch, unit, years served, and duty station, ship, or base if you know it.
Another member who recognizes the details may be able to help you reconnect.
VetFriends does not hold official military records. You can request them from the U.S. Government.
Most requests take about 12 weeks. Requests that involve records damaged in the 1973 National Personnel Records Center fire can take considerably longer.
Contact the National Archives at archives.gov or 314-801-0800 for help locating records. To request records online:
- Main page: archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records
- Start a request: vetrecs.archives.gov
Not even the U.S. Government keeps track of where every veteran is today. VetFriends is a member registry, so a person generally has to have registered with us to be found and contacted. We currently have over 3 million members, and that number grows every day, so it's worth checking back if you don't find someone now.
