• Multiple Designations: VA-25, known as “Fist of the Fleet,” was originally established as Torpedo Squadron VT-17 in 1943, redesignated as VA-6B, then VA-65, before finally becoming VA-25 in 1959. • World War II Service: As VT-17, the squadron flew Grumman TBF/TBM Avengers in the Pacific Theater, participating in major operations such as the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. • Korean War Deployments: The squadron, flying AD Skyraiders, flew multiple combat missions during the Korean War, providing close air support and interdiction missions. • Vietnam War Notoriety: VA-25 is famous for its Skyraider aircraft which participated in numerous bombing missions over Vietnam, including the legendary “Toilet Bomb” drop in 1965. • The Toilet Bomb: On November 4, 1965, VA-25’s crew dropped a makeshift bomb made from a toilet fixture as a humorous morale booster during a combat mission over North Vietnam. This event is one of the most storied anecdotes in naval aviation history. • Aircraft Flown: Over its history, VA-25 operated several iconic aircraft, including the TBF/TBM Avenger, the AD/A-1 Skyraider, and ultimately the A-7 Corsair II. • Distinguished Unit Citations: The squadron earned numerous awards and citations, including the Navy Unit Commendation for its outstanding performance in combat operations. • Firsts in Naval Aviation: VA-25 was among the first squadrons to operate the A-1 Skyraider in both propeller-driven and jet-assisted roles during the Cold War era. • Carrier Deployments: The unit served aboard many famous aircraft carriers such as USS Hornet (CV-12), USS Midway (CV-41), and USS Coral Sea (CV-43). • Deactivation: VA-25 was disestablished on 1 July 1972, marking the end of nearly three decades of distinguished service in the U.S. Navy.
