• USCGC Primrose (WLI-293) is a United States Coast Guard inland buoy tender, originally built in 1943 during World War II. • The vessel was part of the “Iris” or “Cactus” class of tenders, which were designed to maintain aids to navigation, particularly buoys, on rivers and inland waterways. • Primrose was constructed by the Zenith Dredge Company in Duluth, Minnesota—one of several shipyards rapidly producing vessels for the war effort. • After commissioning, Primrose’s primary mission was to service navigational aids along the Mississippi River and its tributaries, ensuring safe passage for military and commercial vessels. • During the floods of 1951 in the Midwest, Primrose played a key role in search-and-rescue operations and in repositioning buoys displaced by floodwaters. • In addition to navigation work, Primrose was often called upon for ice-breaking duties in the spring, helping to clear waterways for early-season commerce. • The crew of the Primrose occasionally participated in dramatic rescue operations, including assisting stranded mariners and recovering lost vessels during storms on the Mississippi. • Over her decades of service, Primrose underwent several modernizations, including upgrades to her engines, navigation systems, and crew accommodations. • The vessel’s small size and shallow draft allowed her to operate in remote and difficult-to-access regions, making her essential for maintaining navigation aids in challenging environments. • Like other Coast Guard buoy tenders, Primrose fostered a tight-knit crew culture, with many members recalling their time aboard as formative, marked by teamwork, tradition, and service to the nation’s mariners.
