• Origins in the Kingdom of Hawaii: The Hawaii Army National Guard (HIARNG) traces its roots to 1893, when it began as the "National Guard of Hawaii" during the Kingdom of Hawaii era, predating Hawaii’s statehood. • World War II Service: After Pearl Harbor, thousands of HIARNG soldiers were mobilized. Many served with the famed 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team, composed mostly of Japanese Americans who became some of the most decorated units in U.S. military history. • Statehood Transition: When Hawaii became a U.S. state in 1959, the Hawaii Army National Guard officially became part of the National Guard system, integrating into federal and state missions. • Disaster Response: HIARNG plays a critical role in disaster response, assisting in hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, and floods. Notably, they provided significant support during Hurricane Iniki in 1992 and Kīlauea eruptions. • Unique Training Environment: Guard units in Hawaii train in diverse environments, from rainforests to lava fields, giving them unique expertise in jungle warfare and tropical operations. • Pacific Partnerships: HIARNG regularly partners with military units from Pacific nations, conducting joint exercises and humanitarian missions throughout the region, strengthening international ties. • 9/11 and Global Deployments: Since 2001, HIARNG soldiers have deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, the Philippines, and other locations in support of the Global War on Terror. • Diverse Force: Reflecting Hawaii’s multicultural heritage, the HIARNG is one of the most ethnically diverse units in the National Guard, fostering a unique esprit de corps. • Pū‘ali Koa o Hawai‘i: The HIARNG’s Hawaiian motto, “Pū‘ali Koa o Hawai‘i,” means “Warriors of Hawaii,” symbolizing their commitment to both state and nation. • Public Service Beyond Combat: Many HIARNG members serve as first responders, teachers, and community leaders, reinforcing the Guard’s dual mission of military and civic service to Hawaii.
