It is perhaps best known for its role under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer during the Indian Wars, particularly the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. The regiment has since served in numerous conflicts, including the Spanish-American War, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and more recent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
