• Vietnam War Deployment: The 38th Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance), known as 38th Med Det (HA), was deployed to Vietnam under the United States Army Republic of Vietnam (USARV) command from 1966, playing a key role in air medical evacuation (“Dustoff”) missions. • “Dustoff” Callsign: The unit operated under the famous “Dustoff” callsign, which became synonymous with medevac missions and heroism under fire, saving countless lives. • First in I Corps: The 38th Med Det (HA) was the first dedicated Dustoff unit assigned to the I Corps Tactical Zone, covering some of the fiercest fighting in the northernmost region of South Vietnam. • High Risk Missions: The 38th routinely flew into “hot” landing zones, often under direct enemy fire, to extract wounded soldiers, exemplifying the motto “So That Others May Live.” • Aircraft Used: The unit primarily operated the UH-1 “Huey” helicopter, which became an iconic symbol of the Vietnam War and revolutionized battlefield medical evacuation. • Heroic Pilots and Crews: Many members of the 38th Med Det (HA) received awards for valor, including Distinguished Flying Crosses, Air Medals, and in some cases Purple Hearts for being wounded during missions. • Critical Support for Marines: The 38th provided indispensable medevac support for the U.S. Marine Corps and Army units during major battles like Khe Sanh and the Tet Offensive of 1968. • Innovative Medical Care: The unit’s medics practiced advanced in-flight care, helping to dramatically improve survival rates for wounded personnel compared to previous conflicts. • Legacy of Service: Veterans of the 38th Med Det (HA) have maintained a strong legacy of camaraderie, with reunions and organizations dedicated to preserving their history and honoring their fallen. • Unit Colors Retired: After Vietnam, the 38th’s colors were eventually retired, but the unit’s traditions and history continue to inspire modern Army MEDEVAC units.
