• Origins in the Civil War: The 2nd Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment traces its lineage back to 1855 as part of the original 4th U.S. Cavalry, participating in the Civil War on the Union side. • Indian Wars Service: Elements of the 4th Cavalry, including future 2/4th Cav troopers, fought in numerous campaigns during the Indian Wars, including in Kansas, Texas, and the Great Plains. • World War II Actions: The regiment saw action in the Pacific Theater, notably in the liberation of the Philippines, and earned multiple campaign streamers. • Vietnam War "Raiders": 2/4th Cavalry, nicknamed the “Raiders,” was one of the most decorated units in Vietnam, conducting reconnaissance, search and destroy, and armored cavalry missions from 1966 to 1972. • Battle of Suoi Tre: On March 21, 1967, 2/4th Cav played a decisive role in the Battle of Suoi Tre, repelling an NVA assault and earning the Presidential Unit Citation. • Operation Junction City: 2/4th Cav participated in this major airborne and ground offensive, the largest U.S. operation of the Vietnam War, targeting Viet Cong bases in 1967. • Gulf War Service: The squadron served as part of the 24th Infantry Division during Operation Desert Storm, leading reconnaissance missions deep into Iraqi territory. • Bosnia & Kosovo Deployments: In the 1990s, 2/4th Cav deployed to Bosnia and later Kosovo as part of NATO peacekeeping operations. • OIF and OEF Deployments: The unit deployed multiple times to Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom) and Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom), conducting reconnaissance, security, and combat operations. • Distinctive Unit Insignia: The 2/4th Cav's crest features crossed sabers and a gold and black color motif, symbolizing its cavalry lineage and storied history.
