1:16th Field Artillery

• Formation and World War I Origins: The 1st Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment (1/16th FA) was constituted on 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army as Battery A, 16th Field Artillery, and organized on 21 May 1917 at Camp Robinson, Wisconsin. • World War I Service: The unit served with distinction in France during World War I as part of the 4th Division, participating in key campaigns such as Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Champagne 1918. • Nickname "Rolling Thunder": The battalion has earned the nickname "Rolling Thunder" for its rapid and powerful artillery barrages in multiple conflicts. • World War II Actions: During World War II, the battalion fought in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace (the Battle of the Bulge), and Central Europe as part of the 4th Infantry Division. • Vietnam War Deployments: 1/16th FA was deployed to Vietnam, where it participated in 12 major campaigns and was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. • Desert Storm: The battalion served in Operation Desert Storm (1990-1991) as part of the "Big Red One" (1st Infantry Division), providing critical fire support during the liberation of Kuwait. • Modern Equipment: 1/16th FA is equipped with the M109A6 Paladin self-propelled howitzer, a highly advanced artillery system capable of rapid movement and precision fire. • Distinctive Unit Insignia: The unit's insignia features a gold lion holding a red arrow, symbolizing courage and the unit’s artillery mission. • Global Deployments: In addition to major wars, the battalion has participated in peacekeeping and stability operations, including deployments to Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. • Legacy of Valor: Over its history, the 1/16th Field Artillery has received numerous decorations, including Presidential Unit Citations and foreign awards, cementing its reputation as one of the Army’s premier artillery battalions.
