• USS Safeguard (ARS-25) was a Diver-class rescue and salvage ship commissioned by the United States Navy during World War II. • The ship was laid down on June 5, 1943, at Basalt Rock Company, Napa, California, and launched on September 12, 1943. • USS Safeguard was commissioned on August 30, 1944, and served actively in the Pacific Theater during World War II. • During her service, Safeguard provided critical salvage, towing, and repair support to damaged ships, especially during the Battle of Okinawa. • The ship played a role in the aftermath of kamikaze attacks, rescuing sailors and assisting in fire-fighting and salvage operations aboard stricken vessels. • After World War II, Safeguard participated in the occupation of Japan by providing support services at various ports, including Yokosuka and Sasebo. • She received two battle stars for her service during World War II, recognizing her valuable contributions under combat conditions. • Following the war, the ship continued to serve in the Far East, including salvage operations and support for the U.S. 7th Fleet during the Korean War era. • Safeguard was decommissioned on September 26, 1946, but was recommissioned on December 8, 1951, due to the Korean War, serving until her final decommissioning on September 9, 1955. • After decommissioning, USS Safeguard (ARS-25) was eventually struck from the Naval Vessel Register and sold for scrap in 1979, marking the end of her long and storied career.
