Carswell Air Force Base (AFB), originally established as Fort Worth Army Airfield in 1942, served as a major United States military installation in Fort Worth, Texas. Throughout the Cold War, it was a key component of Strategic Air Command, hosting B-36 Peacemaker, B-52 Stratofortress, and later B-1B Lancer bombers as part of the 7th Bomb Wing. The base played a vital role in America's nuclear deterrence strategy and long-range bomber operations. Carswell AFB was officially closed as an active-duty base in 1994, transitioning to Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, but its legacy endures in U.S. military aviation history.

Origins as Tarrant Field: Carswell Air Force Base began as Tarrant Field in 1942, serving as a training base for heavy bombers during World War II.
Named After a Medal of Honor Recipient: The base was renamed in 1948 to honor Major Horace S. Carswell, Jr., a Fort Worth native and B-24 pilot who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his heroism in China during WWII.
Strategic Air Command Hub: For decades, Carswell AFB was a major Strategic Air Command (SAC) base, hosting B-36 Peacemakers, B-52 Stratofortresses, KC-135 Stratotankers, and later, B-1B Lancers.
B-36 Peacemaker Home: Carswell was the first base to receive the Convair B-36 Peacemaker, the largest mass-produced piston-engined aircraft ever made, which became a symbol of Cold War deterrence.
Presidential Visit: President Harry S. Truman visited Carswell AFB in September 1947 to view the new B-36 bomber, highlighting the base's national strategic importance.
SAC Bombing Competition Host: Carswell hosted the annual Strategic Air Command Bombing and Navigation Competition, drawing crews from across the country to demonstrate their skills.
Women in the Air Force: Carswell AFB was among the first bases to integrate Women in the Air Force (WAFs) in the early 1950s, reflecting broader changes in military policy.
