• Origins in World War II: The roots of Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) can be traced to World War II, when the U.S. Army Air Forces conducted special operations such as resupply, infiltration, and psychological warfare missions in the China-Burma-India Theater. • Official Activation: AFSOC was officially established as a Major Command on May 22, 1990, marking the Air Force's commitment to a dedicated special operations force. • Night Stalkers' Airlift: During Operation Just Cause in Panama (1989), AFSOC’s MC-130s and AC-130 Gunships played a critical role in supporting Army Rangers and other units during the night assault on key objectives. • Operation Eagle Claw: Although not yet called AFSOC, the failed 1980 Iranian hostage rescue mission highlighted the need for a dedicated Air Force special operations component, which influenced the formation of AFSOC. • Unique Aircraft: AFSOC operates some of the Air Force’s most unique aircraft, including the AC-130 gunship, CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor, MC-130 Commando II, and U-28A Draco. • Combat Controllers (CCT): AFSOC’s Combat Controllers are among the most highly trained airmen, qualified in air traffic control, scuba diving, parachuting, and are often embedded with other Special Operations Forces. • Global Presence: AFSOC units have operated in nearly every major U.S. military engagement since its creation, including Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and ongoing missions across Africa and Asia. • Quiet Professionals: The motto of AFSOC is “Quiet Professionals,” highlighting the unit’s commitment to executing high-risk missions discreetly and efficiently. • First into Afghanistan: After 9/11, the first American boots on the ground in Afghanistan were AFSOC operators, who helped coordinate the initial strikes and guide U.S. forces. • Valor and Sacrifice: AFSOC airmen have received numerous awards for valor, including Air Force Crosses and Silver Stars, often for actions under fire to save teammates or accomplish critical missions.
