• Origins: The Air Force Global Weather Central (AFGWC) was established in 1948, shortly after the creation of the United States Air Force, to centralize weather data and forecasting for military operations worldwide. • Strategic Role: AFGWC played a crucial part in Cold War readiness by providing weather support for Strategic Air Command's nuclear bomber and missile forces. • Location: For much of its history, AFGWC was headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, a key hub for command and control operations. • Technological Advances: AFGWC was a pioneer in using computers for meteorological forecasting, operating early systems like the IBM 701 and later, the CDC 6600 supercomputers. • Global Reach: The unit provided weather data and forecasts to US military units worldwide, supporting air, land, and naval operations. • Vietnam War Support: During the Vietnam War, AFGWC provided critical weather support to air operations over Southeast Asia, helping to plan missions and avoid dangerous weather. • Satellite Era: AFGWC was instrumental in integrating satellite imagery into operational weather forecasting, significantly improving accuracy and global coverage. • Desert Storm: In Operation Desert Storm (1991), AFGWC delivered essential weather intelligence, greatly aiding coalition air campaign planning and execution. • Transition: In 1997, AFGWC’s mission and personnel were merged into the newly formed Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA), marking the end of AFGWC as a standalone unit. • Legacy: The AFGWC's legacy lives on in the modern 557th Weather Wing, which continues to provide advanced weather services to the US Air Force and Department of Defense.
