• Origins: The 926th Tactical Airlift Group (TAG) was originally constituted as the 926th Troop Carrier Group in the Air Force Reserve on December 28, 1962. • Activation: The unit was activated on January 17, 1963, at Naval Air Station New Orleans, Louisiana. • Aircraft Evolution: Over its history, the 926th TAG has operated several aircraft, including the Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar, Lockheed C-130 Hercules, and later the A-10 Thunderbolt II. • Vietnam War Support: During the Vietnam War era, the unit flew airlift missions to support U.S. operations, including transporting cargo, personnel, and medical supplies. • Hurricane Katrina Response: Members of the 926th played a significant role in humanitarian missions during and after Hurricane Katrina, providing critical airlift support to affected areas. • Redesignation: In 1992, the 926th TAG was redesignated the 926th Fighter Group, marking its transition from airlift to fighter operations. • Relocation: In 2007, the unit relocated from Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans to Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. • Current Role: Now known as the 926th Wing, it serves as an associate unit supporting the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center in advanced training and testing. • Integration: The 926th is notable for its “classic associate” structure, meaning its reservists work side-by-side with active-duty personnel, sharing aircraft and missions. • Notable Achievements: The 926th has received multiple Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards for its exemplary service and operational excellence throughout its history.
