50th Space Wing

• The 50th Space Wing was activated on January 30, 1992, at Falcon Air Force Base in Colorado. • The wing's mission is to provide command and control for Department of Defense satellite systems, as well as ensuring space superiority for the United States. • The 50th Operations Group, a subordinate unit of the wing, is responsible for operating the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites. • In 1992, the 2nd Space Operations Squadron, a unit within the 50th Space Wing, became the first squadron to control GPS satellites from space. • The wing has been involved in numerous space operations, including supporting combat operations during the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, and the Iraq War. • The 50th Space Wing is responsible for monitoring over 150 satellites in orbit, providing critical communications, navigation, and early warning capabilities for the military. • In 2015, the wing established a partnership with the National Reconnaissance Office to enhance space situational awareness and improve satellite collision avoidance efforts. • The 50th Space Wing has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Space Operations Excellence Award. • The wing has a long history of innovation and technological advancement, consistently pushing the boundaries of satellite technology and space operations. • The 50th Space Wing continues to play a critical role in national security and defense, ensuring that the United States remains a dominant force in space.
