• Origins: The 4th Civil Engineering Squadron (4 CES) traces its roots back to the activation of the 4th Air Base Group at Andrews Air Force Base in 1947, supporting the newly formed U.S. Air Force. • Location: Today, the 4 CES is based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, and provides comprehensive civil engineering support to the 4th Fighter Wing. • Rapid Runway Repair: The squadron specializes in rapid runway repair, a critical wartime task that ensures aircraft can continue operations after enemy attacks. • Disaster Response: 4 CES played a vital role in disaster relief efforts after Hurricane Floyd in 1999, helping restore base operations and assisting local communities. • Deployment Experience: Members of the squadron have deployed to multiple theaters, including Southwest Asia, supporting Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. • Firefighting Excellence: The squadron’s Fire Emergency Services Flight has won numerous awards for its life-saving actions and outstanding performance in both peacetime and contingency operations. • Environmental Stewardship: 4 CES leads environmental initiatives at Seymour Johnson AFB, such as hazardous waste management and water conservation programs, earning recognition for sustainability. • Red Horse Connection: Several 4 CES members have served on temporary duty with RED HORSE (Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers) units, gaining unique combat engineering expertise. • Base Infrastructure: The squadron is responsible for maintaining over $1 billion in real property assets, including runways, facilities, and utilities, ensuring mission readiness. • Community Partnership: 4 CES actively partners with local communities, participating in Habitat for Humanity projects and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) outreach events.
