4925 Test Group

• Formation and Mission: The 4925th Test Group (Atomic) was established in 1948 at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, with the primary mission to test and develop delivery techniques for atomic weapons. • Nickname: The unit was sometimes referred to as “The Men Who Made the Bomb Fly” due to their critical role in integrating nuclear weapons with aircraft and delivery systems. • First Atomic Bomb Drop Training: The 4925th was the first Air Force unit to train crews, including pilots and bombardiers, in the actual handling and delivery of live atomic bombs. • Aircraft Variety: The group tested nuclear delivery on a range of aircraft, including B-29, B-50, B-36, B-47, B-57, and B-52 bombers, as well as fighters like the F-84 and F-100. • Operation Sandstone: Members of the 4925th took part in Operation Sandstone (1948), one of the earliest series of nuclear tests conducted at Enewetak Atoll. • Innovative Delivery Methods: The unit pioneered numerous atomic bomb delivery tactics, including low-altitude “laydown” delivery and airburst techniques. • Project Redwing: In the 1950s, the unit participated in Project Redwing, conducting atmospheric nuclear tests in the Pacific that contributed to improved weapon designs and delivery procedures. • Involvement in “Broken Arrow” Exercises: The group played key roles in practice and response to “Broken Arrow” incidents—accidental events involving nuclear weapons. • Deactivation: The 4925th Test Group was deactivated in 1961 as the Air Force centralized and reorganized its nuclear testing and delivery operations. • Legacy: The group’s work directly influenced the tactics, techniques, and procedures used by the Strategic Air Command during the Cold War, leaving a substantial legacy in nuclear deterrence and airpower strategy.
