The 390th Tactical Fighter Squadron (390th TFS), known as the "Wild Boars," was deployed to Da Nang Air Base, South Vietnam, during the Vietnam War. Arriving in 1965, the squadron was equipped with F-4C Phantom II fighter-bombers and played a critical role in air superiority, ground attack, and close air support missions. The 390th TFS participated in major operations such as Rolling Thunder and Linebacker, striking key enemy targets in North Vietnam and Laos. The squadron earned a distinguished reputation for its effectiveness and bravery before rotating out of Da Nang in 1972.

First Mig Kill: On June 5, 1967, pilots from the 390th TFS scored their first aerial victory by shooting down a North Vietnamese MiG-17, marking the unit's entry into air-to-air combat history.
Operation Rolling Thunder: The squadron participated in the sustained bombing campaign known as Operation Rolling Thunder, targeting North Vietnamese infrastructure and supply routes.
Notable Ace: Captain Charles "Chuck" DeBellevue, who later became the leading US ace of the Vietnam War with six MiG kills, was assigned to the 390th TFS during his service.
MiG Sweep Missions: The 390th TFS was involved in "MiG sweep" missions, designed to lure North Vietnamese fighters into combat with US Phantoms, often resulting in intense dogfights.
