About 192nd TFG, VaANG

The 192nd Tactical Fighter Group (TFG), Virginia Air National Guard (VaANG), was established in 1962 and is based at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. Throughout its history, the 192nd TFG has operated a variety of fighter aircraft, including the F-84F Thunderstreak, F-105 Thunderchief, and later the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The unit has participated in numerous training exercises and deployments, supporting both state and federal missions, as well as overseas operations. In 2007, the 192nd transitioned to the 192nd Fighter Wing, aligning closely with the active-duty 1st Fighter Wing and flying the F-22 Raptor as part of the Air Force's Total Force Integration initiative.

Origins and Early Years: The 192nd Tactical Fighter Group (TFG) traces its heritage to the 149th Fighter Squadron, which was federally recognized on July 21, 1947, at Byrd Field, Sandston, Virginia, as part of the Virginia Air National Guard (VaANG).
Korean War Mobilization: The unit was mobilized for federal service during the Korean War, serving in an air defense role and helping to protect the continental United States during a time of heightened global tensions.
Cold War Air Defense: During the Cold War, the 192nd TFG operated several aircraft types, including the F-84 Thunderjet and F-86 Sabre, conducting air defense missions to intercept potential Soviet threats along the U.S. east coast.
Transition to Tactical Fighters: In 1971, the unit transitioned from an air defense mission to a tactical fighter role, reflecting changes in national defense strategy and leading to its designation as the 192nd Tactical Fighter Group.
F-105 Thunderchief Era: The 192nd TFG became one of the few Air National Guard units to operate the iconic F-105 Thunderchief, a supersonic fighter-bomber known for its service in the Vietnam War.
F-16 Fighting Falcon Operations: In the late 1980s, the 192nd TFG converted to the F-16 Fighting Falcon, dramatically increasing its combat capability and allowing it to participate in worldwide exercises and deployments.
Operation Desert Storm Support: During the Gulf War in 1991, personnel from the 192nd TFG were activated and deployed to support Operation Desert Storm, providing critical airpower and support functions.
