152 Airlift Wing

• Origins and Activation: The 152nd Airlift Wing (152 AW) is a unit of the Nevada Air National Guard, first activated in 1958 as the 152nd Fighter-Interceptor Group at Reno Air National Guard Base, Nevada. • Transition to Airlift: In 1961, the unit transitioned from a fighter-interceptor role to tactical reconnaissance, later specializing in airlift missions and becoming the 152nd Airlift Wing. • “High Rollers” Nickname: The unit is famously known as the “High Rollers,” a nod to Nevada’s gambling heritage and the unit’s ability to “roll in” with timely support. • WC-130 “Weatherbird” Missions: In the 1970s, the 152nd operated WC-130 aircraft for weather reconnaissance, participating in hurricane tracking and atmospheric research missions. • Operation Desert Storm: Members of the 152nd played a key role in Operation Desert Storm, providing reconnaissance and airlift support during the Gulf War in 1991. • Post-9/11 Deployments: Since September 11, 2001, the 152nd has deployed multiple times in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, transporting personnel and supplies to combat zones. • MAFFS Firefighting: The 152nd AW operates C-130 Hercules aircraft equipped with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS), supporting wildfire suppression efforts across the western United States. • Global Humanitarian Assistance: The unit has participated in numerous humanitarian missions, including delivering relief supplies after natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods worldwide. • Distinguished Awards: The 152nd Airlift Wing has received multiple Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards for exemplary performance in both combat and peacetime missions. • Community Involvement: In addition to its federal mission, the “High Rollers” are deeply involved in local Nevada communities through outreach, education, and emergency response partnerships.
