150th Fighter Wing

• Origins: The 150th Fighter Wing (150 FW) traces its roots to the 188th Fighter Squadron, established in 1947 as part of the New Mexico Air National Guard. • Nickname: The unit is widely known as the "Tacos," a nod to its New Mexico heritage. • Berlin Crisis Activation: The 150th was federally activated during the Berlin Crisis in 1961, deploying personnel and resources to Europe as part of the U.S. response. • Vietnam War Support: Although the unit itself was not deployed, numerous unit members volunteered and served in Vietnam, supporting Air Force operations. • Aircraft Evolution: The 150th has flown a variety of aircraft, including the F-51 Mustang, F-100 Super Sabre, A-7D Corsair II, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and later, the special operations MC-130 and HC-130. • Homeland Security: After 9/11, the 150th FW played a significant role in Operation Noble Eagle, providing air defense over the southwestern United States. • Air Sovereignty Alert: The unit was responsible for 24/7 alert missions, ready to intercept unidentified or hostile aircraft approaching U.S. airspace. • BRAC Changes: The 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process led to major changes for the wing, including the loss of its F-16 mission and a transition to a special operations focus in partnership with the 58th Special Operations Wing. • Unique Partnership: The 150th established a Total Force Integration association with Kirtland Air Force Base, working closely with active duty units on special operations and search and rescue training. • Distinguished Honors: Over its history, the 150th Fighter Wing has earned multiple Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards for exemplary performance and service in both federal and state missions.
