I joined the Navy in 1954 at the age of 19 and had boot camp at Bainbridge, MD. After boot camp I remained at Bainbridge for Hospital Corps School. I graduated at the top of my class and earned my HN stripes.I was transferred to the Naval Hodpital in Philadelphia, PA from 1955 to 1956. I earned my HM3 and HM2 stripes in 27 months while at the hospital. I worked on the SOQ ward for about a year and then the eye, ear nose and throat operating room assisting the doctors. When my sea duty came up I went to Field Medical Service Training at Camp Pendleton. My orders then were to Okinawa for 14 months with the FMF. I was with H&S co. Third Matgines at Camp Sukiran and then to a tent city which I do not remember the name of. I ran the sick bay and also the pharmacy while there. I was discharged in July 1958 from Treasure Island.
