DLIFLC, Monterey
U.S. Army
The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC), located in Monterey, California, traces its origins to the Military Intelligence Service Language School established in 1941 at the Presidio of San Francisco to train Nisei soldiers in Japanese. In 1946, the school moved to the Presidio of Monterey, where it expanded its curriculum to include a wide range of critical languages for U.S. military and government personnel. Over the decades, DLIFLC has become the Department of Defense’s premier language training institution, providing intensive instruction in more than a dozen languages to service members from all branches. The institute plays a vital role in enhancing linguistic capabilities and cultural understanding, supporting U.S. military operations and intelligence efforts worldwide.
USA MILPERCEN, Germany
U.S. Army
The United States Army Military Personnel Center (MILPERCEN), Germany, served as a key administrative unit responsible for personnel management of U.S. Army forces stationed in Europe during the Cold War. Established in the post-World War II era, MILPERCEN Germany was instrumental in facilitating assignments, promotions, records management, and other human resources functions for soldiers and their families. Its operations ensured that the large U.S. military presence in Germany remained efficient, well-supported, and mission-ready throughout periods of heightened tension with the Soviet Union. The unit adapted over time to evolving Army structures before its functions were eventually consolidated as part of broader Army personnel management reorganizations.
Yuma Proving Ground
U.S. Army
Yuma Proving Ground (YPG), located in southwestern Arizona, was established in 1943 as the U.S. Army's Camp Laguna and the Yuma Test Branch to support World War II training and testing operations. During the war, the area was used extensively to test combat vehicles, weapons, and equipment in harsh desert conditions. After the war, the facility evolved into one of the Army’s premier test centers, supporting research and development for artillery, munitions, and vehicle systems. Today, Yuma Proving Ground is a critical asset for the U.S. Army, conducting year-round testing of military hardware for all branches of the armed forces and allied nations.
