The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, known as the "Hurricane Hunters," was first activated in 1944 and has since become renowned for its vital weather reconnaissance missions. Since 1976, the unit has primarily been tasked with flying into hurricanes and tropical storms to collect data crucial for forecasting and disaster preparedness.
