Decoration Day (as it was called then) was special because I was born on that day. Our family always visited the cemetaries where grandparents were buried, putting lilacs from our big bush on their graves. Later, when I became a Boy Scout, our troop had part in placing flowers on the river for Navy vets remembered; then marched to the cemetery for Taps for veterans of the Civil War, Spanish-American & World War I. We also helped place American flags on all graves of vets. Now, as a vet of World War II, parade organizers seem to think I should ride & wave to the children. I remember comrades who climbed up German hills under fire with me. Some are in cross-covered resting places of foreign soil. As we take part in a parade, I pray for our country: May she be strong, because she is right in God's eyes.

Happy Memorial Day to everyone that has served, is serving and especially to the ones who gave their lives for Freedom's sake. For all of the the huge sacrifices that they have to make everyday, for the risks they take, for laying their lives on the line. For having courage and being so brave for all of us. For all the times they have had to leave their families behind while they deploy to another Country. For the tears, the bloodshed, and all of the times when they have to do without so I could enjoy my life in Peace in our Country. For the good things that come along to offset the bad that makes it all worth while. Thank You Troops, Thank You Veterans, Thank You for all who have served, are serving and all that have given their all. It is not in vain. We owe you everything. I appreciate you everyday, I salute you as much as I can and if I see a soldier or a member of any of our Military in uniform when I travel or shop I always go out of my way to shake their hand and say I appreciate you. It is the very least that I can do. When I do this, I get big smiles that lets me know that they appreciate my support. You are all special.
br br
My prayers are with you and I support you 100%. You are doing a great work for us all and Thank You, my prayers and thoughts are with you always. God Bless You and God Bless America ! Let Freedom Ring !

Memorial Day to me means remembering all who have gone before us. It is also a time to remember those who fought for my freedom and thank them as best I can. My Dad was a WWII vet, my husband a Viet Nam vet, my husband's uncle walked across Germany and has told us several funny and very sad stories. Some you never would think could happen. His uncle is the only one of our families that has spoken of his journey overseas.
On a lighter note, North of Greenfield, Iowa on hiway 25 (south of I-80 at the Greenfield exit about 2 miles) there is a huge rock setting there. For the past 10 years a young man from Greenfield has painted a tribute to veterans of all wars. His name is Ray Bubba Sorensen II. It has never been vandalized. People pay there respects at this rock all year round. Bubba says he has never served in the military but this is his way to honor those who have fought for our freedom. Please make a point to visit this rock this summer and hopefully Bubba will continue to paint on this rock for many years to come, but will not have to honor any current soldiers serving overseas--maybe we can get them all home!
,This wil be the first Memorial Day since my dad was killed in a car accident 5-7-08. My daddy was a desrt storm vet. Memorial day and Veterns Day wil mean so much ore to me now. Please take timetime this yearto remember those killed serving our country and those who have died in other ways. HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY TO ALL THE VETS AND ACTIVE MILITARY.

I served as a member of the Coast Guard contingent as part of the Honor Guard for the 1958 Interment of the Unknowns. We marched approx. 4 1/2 miles from the Capital into Arlington Cemetery. It was surely a very great honor for me and a extremely moving moment in my life.

Memorial Day means to me to remember all the soldiers that lost their lives defending our country & helping ensure peace in other countries. My brother gave his life in Vietnam at a young age, and never got to find out what life would really be about. I also lost alot of friends that served in Vietnam. My husband was also in Vietnam, and survived through all of it. Yet he suffered alot inside of what he went through. Especially how some people treated him when he came home. He suffered alot of stressful moments caused by the war. I think there should be a day to honor not just the fallen soldiers, but a special day to give tribute to all the soldiers that served our country in times of war.

Memorial Day is an important time for those who know the losses involved. However, I would like that this Day represents homage not only to the physical aspects we have shared; but also, to the reality that we share a DNA beyond physical minds, hearts, or bodies. We are always 'One' and what we do here now must always be a continuance of what we started together. What we believed in together. I know not 'death' other than as a definition of 'man' for loss of our physical aspects. But we are more than just a 'body'; we always have been, and we always will be. I will share 'Being' always with those I have served with. I am an ex-Sgt USMC (1964 - 1970) Vietnam '67 / '68. Thanks for letting me express what I live.

I want to remember my Dad, Eugene A. Vestal, who served in World War II in the Army.
He was in Panama, England and then he served in some parts of the United States.
He died of Pneumonia in 1998 when he was 82. He spent 15 years in the Army and
that was all he spoke of when he came home. I know that he is in heaven with my
Mom probably talking with all the other veterans. God keep both he and my mom in your loving arms.
I WILL REMEMBER YOU ALWAYS.
Love,
your daughter Anita
