History of 1:25th Marines

The 1st Battalion, 25th Marines (1/25) is a distinguished infantry battalion of the United States Marine Corps Reserve, headquartered in Fort Devens, Massachusetts. Activated during World War II in 1943, 1/25th Marines participated in key Pacific campaigns, including the battles of Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. After deactivation post-war, the battalion was reactivated and has since served in various capacities, including deployments to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Today, 1/25th Marines continues its tradition of excellence, providing trained reserve Marines ready to support and augment active duty forces as needed.

ABOUT 1:25th Marines

  • Origins & Activation: The 1st Battalion, 25th Marines (1/25) was originally activated during World War II on May 1, 1943, at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
  • Nickname - "New England's Own": 1/25th Marines is primarily composed of Marines from the New England area, earning them the nickname "New England’s Own."
  • World War II Service: The battalion participated in major Pacific campaigns, including the Battles of Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima, earning Presidential Unit Citations for their bravery.
  • Iwo Jima Flag Raisers: Several Marines from 1/25 participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima, and the battalion was present during the iconic flag raising on Mount Suribachi.
  • Reservist Battalion: 1/25 is a reserve infantry battalion, part of the 4th Marine Division, and is headquartered in Fort Devens, Massachusetts.
  • September 11, 2001 Response: In the aftermath of 9/11, 1/25th Marines was one of the first reserve units mobilized to provide homeland defense and later deployed overseas.
  • Operation Iraqi Freedom: The battalion deployed to Fallujah, Iraq in 2006, conducting extensive combat operations and security missions during a critical period of the Iraq War.
