Mitch McCasey is a troubled nineteen year old with a tragic past. Drafted into the US Army, Mitch is ordered to Vietnam despite an exemption from combat duty. Bullied into service in the Da Nang Mortuary, he is confronted with handling mangled remains, the ever present stench, and constant reminders of how quick and frequently death arrives- the reality that he too might end up in a body bag. Befriended by compassionate Officer and a back-woods farm boy, he struggles to maintain a semblance of sanity amid the carnage. In the midst of this hell, Mitch meets and falls in love with Bev, the girl of his dreams-someone very much alive in a sea of dead. Hopelessly smitten, he tries to escape the daily horrors surrounding him by planning their future together. But instead, finds himself dragged deeper into conflict with each passing day. the mission of the work is to bring about awareness of the incredible men who staffed GR and the devastation experienced by many of the soldiers who served in the war zone. While the characters are fictitious, all scenes depict in the novel are from actual events of the men who lived them. The numbers of the remains cited in COT were taken from Da Nang mortuary records from 1967-1968
